WIC
Women,
Infants and Children Food Program
Today, at least 47 percent of all infants
born in the U.S. and nearly one in five children ages one to five
are on WIC. Recognized as the nation's premier public health nutrition
program, UDMO is proud to provide this successful program in eight
counties. During the 2000 fiscal year, UDMO served an average of
2,218 participants per month.
WIC offers monthly financial allotments
in the form of WIC checks that enable pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding
women or parents of infants or children age five and under to purchase
healthy foods from WIC-approved vendors. WIC professional staff
also encourages the best source of nutrition for infants--breast
milk. Iron-fortified formula is provided to infants up to age one
if the mother chooses not to or is unable to breastfeed. UDMO registered
nurses provide health screenings, assessments, referrals and immunizations
to children.
