Volunteers

Volunteers are a vital part of communities throughout the nation. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 63.4 million people volunteered nationally from September 2008 through September 2009. In the world of community action, volunteers often step in to fill gaps caused by an increased demand for services and diminished staff and financial resources.

We may see volunteers serving on boards, providing extra support to staff in outreach centers or Head Start classrooms, participating in fundraising efforts, providing supplies and donations, or participating in unique community-based programming. The positive impact of volunteer support is evident everywhere in our organization.

On average, community action agencies across the nation have more than 800 volunteers per year. During the 2009 fiscal year, 593 volunteers donated 75,714 hours to various UDMO projects.
